The PE department at Golborne High School offers a diverse curriculum to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the subject where a passion for physical activity is enthusiastically promoted. This is pivotal to establishing a love of sport and physical activity at a young age which will encourage lifelong participation, develop valuable life skills and prepare pupils to lead a healthy active lifestyle.
In Key Stage 3 pupils build on and embed the physical development, skills and fundamental principles learned in key stages 1 and 2, becoming more competent, confident and expert in their techniques and learning how to apply them across different sports and physical activities. The National Curriculum is followed throughout Key Stage 3 & 4 which develops pupils’ decision-making through having the opportunity to explore a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games. Pupils also develop technique, analyse performance, take part in Outdoor and Adventurous Activity (OAA), perform dances using a range of movement patterns and have plenty of opportunities to take part in competitive sports through extracurricular teams and activities.
The carefully sequenced curriculum allows pupils to develop fundamental skills which can be transferred to a range of different sports and activities. These key concepts are essential building blocks to allow pupils to develop more complex skills, tactics and strategies.
The richness of experience and learning further allows pupils to develop their independence, organisational skills, personal and socials skills such as confidence and teamwork by engaging, supporting and learning from others. Furthermore, pupils will make connections between key concepts within the subject and other subjects, including Science, Geography and History.
In year 10, Key Stage 4 pupils have the option to study AQA GCSE PE or OCR Cambridge National Sports Studies. Throughout Key Stage 4, pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their future by exploring and researching careers in sports so that they specifically know what they need to do to fulfil their ambition. This independence prepares pupils for Post 16 education through A Level PE and Level 3 Vocational Qualifications. Every pupil in Key Stage 4 will further experience a diverse curriculum to further embed prior learning and develop skills learned in Key Stage 3. The priority is to nurture pupils’ enjoyment of sports and physical activity by encouraging inclusive and competitive participation in sports in school and outside of school whilst also preparing pupils for life with the knowledge to look after their physical health and wellbeing.
To enhance our curriculum and to embed skills and knowledge developed in lessons, the PE department offers a vast range of sports and activities through extracurricular clubs. Training and fixtures available to all pupils include football, rugby league, netball, basketball, health-related fitness classes, This Girl Can, athletics, dodgeball, handball, badminton, rounders, cheerleading and dance. Furthermore, to extend pupils’ curiosity for the subject and to enhance their experience of the wider world, the PE department offers a range of educational visits and enhancement trips.
